How does God speak to us today—is it guaranteed? Is it through personal revelation or through techniques developed by some in order to contact Him? Is it through a postmodern community in dialogue? Is it through latter-day apostles and prophets? We propose that each of these methods is uncertain at best and that God only speaks authoritatively through Scripture. Session 1: Personal Tents of Meeting: Divination and Delusion Popular Christian speaker Beth Moore claims that each Christian can have a personal tent of meeting, such as Moses had in the Old Testament, where God will come and speak to them. Pastor Bob DeWaay will prove from Scripture that this is dangerous and unbiblical. Session 2: The Dangers of Mysticism--Unbiblical Techniques to Contact God Some Christian teachers convey the idea that the kingdom of God is “within” each person. Based on that premise they justify that one can make an “inward journey” in order to meet God. Bob DeWaay will show what the Bible teaches: that God is not found by an inward journey, but rather through the Gospel that proclaims Jesus Christ as the High Priest in heaven seated at the right hand of the Father. Session 3: The Emergent Church and Postmodern Mysticism The Emergent Church and purveyors of postmodern theology have launched an assault against theological certainty. They claim that it is naïve or arrogant to think that we can know truth. They want the church to be on a mission to cooperate with other religions in order to make the world a better place to live. Bob DeWaay will counter their arguments and highlight the truth of Scripture. Session 4: The Roots and Fruit of the New Apostolic Reformation In 1996, C. Peter Wagner launched the New Apostolic Reformation, a movement designed to reform the church based on embracing the authority of latter-day apostles and prophets. Bob DeWaay will show that the grandiose claims of the latter day apostles are patently unbiblical and that this movement is not new but has roots in Roman Catholic thinking, the teaching of a 17th-century mystic, and the 20th-century Latter Rain movement.
